Calcium Plus Vitamin D
How it Works
This formula provides important amounts of three essential minerals plus calcium. Combined with other trace minerals needed by the body, calcium helps replenish bone tissue that is constantly being replaced. It is needed by the immune system and is critical to muscle contractions. Calcium comprises half of all the minerals in the body. Calcium and magnesium work together in the body to maintain bone structure and integrity. Magnesium is present in a 1:2 ratio with calcium. Without this important ratio, the body begins to lose one or more minerals before it can utilize them. Vitamin D is needed for the proper dietary absorption of calcium. It helps calcium do its job. At least 400 IU of vitamin D is needed on a daily basis, especially for people not getting enough sunshine (D is the “sunshine vitamin”). Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body. It works with calcium. This formulation provides calcium and phosphorus at a 2:1 ratio. Phosphorus works synergistically with B vitamins to help maintain a proper fluid balance in the body. Eighty-five percent of the phosphorus found in the body is found in the bone.
Why Calcium Plus Vitamin D?
Vitamin D3 offers a host of health benefits. Along with calcium and other minerals, it supports bone health. It also influences mood, and it supports both the innate and adaptive branches of the immune system. On top of all this, Nature’s Sunshine’s Vitamin D3 partner provides a super-clean nutrient; one that is microencapsulated for greater bioavailability. And it’s proudly allergen-free and non-GMO project verified. So you can feel good about feeling good.
The story behind Calcium Plus Vitamin D
In the early 20th century, Sir Edward Mellanby discovered that cod liver oil—a source of vitamin A—alleviated symptoms of rickets. Later, Professor Elmer McCollum tested cod liver oil without vitamin A. When it still prevented rickets, he assumed that a yet-undiscovered nutrient was responsible. He named it vitamin D. In 1937, vitamin D3 was identified by former Nobel-prize-winner Adolph Windaus and his associate. They found that D3 formed in the skin after it was exposed to sunlight. Fifteen years later, a team of researchers discovered that vitamin D mobilized calcium from the bone into the plasma. This led to the understanding of vitamin D’s role in maintaining serum calcium, which affects bone strength and neuromuscular function. Magnesium was named for the region in Greece where this mineral compound was first found. It is critical to bone development and health; heart, brain and kidney function; and to metabolism. It also supports a healthy pregnancy.
